Like most of you I've loved cars since I was a kid. For me though, I never got fully engulfed with the passion, lust and desire of cars, motorsports and speed until I started my freshman year of college. Ever since then, the desire has taken full control of me. Over the years, I have developed some really weird ideas and since it's late and I'm pretty sore from my weight training class, I thought it'd be fun to post them.

So here are some of my perverse engine swap ideas I've developed over the years:

BMW i8 with a Porsche 997.2 GT3RS flat six (it'll literally have eaten a 911 LOL)

BMW z4M Coupe with that Enzo engine from a few months back

BMW e26 M6 with a Mercedes M158

Subaru STI (GD chasis) with a Porsche 997.2 GT3RS flat six (using a C4s drivetrain to preserve the AWD nature of the STI)

BRZ/FR-S with a BMW s85 v10

Keep in mind, these would only be performed on cars that were either on their last legs or so horribly modified into oblivion that it would be just as expensive if not more expensive to bring back to stock form compared to the proposed swap. Donor parts would probably just be from totaled cars.

So what are your perverse engine swap ideas?

Can you put a helicopter engine into a Dodge Daytona?

Beater Dodge Caravan with a Veyron engine where the back seats go, hidden under a faux wooden crate.

Nissan Leaf with internals done by Tesla.

'Busa Peel P50.

Suzuki Swift with a separate motorcycle engine for every wheel.

GSXR with an obnoxiously rumbly Harley engine and vice-versa.

What if we forget about transmissions and all that malarkey? We use the helicopter engines like electric motors are used in Teslas and the SLS electric concept. FOUR helicopter engines all hooked up directly to the wheels and coupled together through some electronic witchcraft. Throw in some torque vectoring and off to the Nurburgring we go.

Now that is a van I would hoon all day long. All your ideas. They're just so perfect. I propose we start a tuner shop and get to work immediately.

Yes! Specializing in cars that are just fun and if you disagree then shut up. That would be the slogan.

2JZ E36 coupe

LS powered new edge mustang

Miata with a porsche straight six

Corvette with a twin turbo rotary

F-150 with a lamborghini V10

Lamborghini powered by dodge V10

The first two are a bit tame but the rest sound pretty cool. Imagine the faces of people hearing a Lamborghini v10 coming from an F-150.

Actually, I thought about using the turboshaft to power a generator that would charge motors to turn the wheels. But then it would just be the least efficient Tesla in history. Since a jet turboshaft rotates at many thousands of rpms direct drive really isn't an option.

Instead of the NA 4.0 flat 6 and backwards C4S drivetrain in an STI, how about take Subaru's own 3.6 liter flat-6 and turbo it (TT preferably)? You could even leave it in the much-less-boyish Legacy GT Spec B.

The V10/V12s in small front-engine coupes don't do as much for me...something like Audi's 2.5T I5 would be an awesome in the Toyobaru (Miata, RX8) because it's so short you'd have the weight further back. In the Z4 I'd just as soon have BMW's own TT I6 with the turbos cranked up.

Hmm you're right, I didn't take that into account. A turboshaft would be a pretty good idea. What if you were to use a differential to offset the high RPM of each engine and drive the wheels using them. One of the diff outputs would be to the drive wheels and the other would be to an F1-style ERS generator to further accelerate the car? The thrust exiting the diff could then maybe used as a soft of blown diffuser?

Well the GT3RS engine redlines at above ~8000 rpm and produces 500hp while the Subaru 3.6 redlines at ~6000rpm and makes 256hp (using a 2015 Legacy R as reference) in stock trim. So the two turbos would probably only get it up to where the GT3RS was at initially without creating insane amounts of turbo lag. Then you'd have to deal with tuning it and making sure the torque curve is flat while also dealing with the turbo lag. So I guess it comes down to preference. I just prefer a screaming naturally aspirated engine you can really ring out.

On top of that, if I remember correctly, Porsche used a magnesium crankcase and some other light weight metals to make the engine lighter. I'd bet it's lighter than the Subaru engine so it shouldn't mess with the STI's weight balance that much. That's just conjecture though since I don't know how much the diffs and engines actually weigh.

As for the z4M, I just like outrageously large engines in shooting brakes like the F12.

Not disputing that the Porsche engine is a fantastic one, it's more that Subaru offers the "working man's" flat engines and AWD, but won't go the extra step of applying its experience turbocharging engines to their 6 cylinders.

A TT flat 6 to me is just about the perfect engine, and with quick-spooling turbos and similar power levels should have fantastic torque. For relatively little cost increase, they could bring back a top-performing Legacy GT like the Spec B, with maybe 400 hp stock, and it would be a monster platform to build off of...

I'm with you on the Subaru-Porsche swap, though I would probably opt for keeping the STi drivetrain and just making a custom engine bay to fit the Porsche engine and a custom bell housing adapter for the Subaru trans.

I thought about doing that too but I heard from my friend with a WRX that the diff and trans might not be able to handle the power from the GT3RS' engine. If it did work though, that'd be a lot less work and money. Not that it matters any way since this isn't reality sadly.

That's definitely true. If only Subaru would get serious and provide a good stock tune with reliable turbocharging and really wring out the performance.

If they made a Legacy like that, I'm sure a lot of people would gladly order them right away.

It is on my bucket list. And there are guys out there with STi's pushing well over 450 hp.

Well yeah, but would the gear ratios of the STI transmission get in the way of that power though?

Quite possibly, and there is also the issue of which direction the Porsche engine turns.
